Consider What’s Happening
Five symptoms, one shape: effort without return. Nobody in this list is lazy — they’re planting, working, earning. They are busy and empty at the same time. And note the pronoun: God says “look what’s happening TO you,” not “look what you’ve done.”

- A robbery you notice. A leak you adjust to.
Confront What’s Competing
God names the competition in verse 9 — and it isn’t sin. It’s “while all of you are busy building your own fine houses.” The timber is finite. Every board in one build is a board missing from the other.
- Not ‘while you were sinning’ — “while you are busy building your own fine houses”
- They were succeeding at the wrong construction project
- Sometimes God’s mercy looks like a season that won’t satisfy you
Consecrate What’s Left
God’s grand strategy for ending a sixteen-year stall: go get some wood. No retreat, no fast, no worship night first. Hike up a hill and carry something heavy down it.
- “Go up into the hills, bring down timber”
- Motion precedes motivation
- “Then I will take pleasure in it and be honored”

- What good thing in your life has quietly gotten promoted to first place?
- Is a God who takes pleasure in you the God you actually picture when you pray? Where did your picture of Him come from?
