Understanding Prayer & Fasting
New to fasting, or want a refresher? Here's what it is, why we do it, and how to choose an approach that fits your life.
What Is Fasting?
Fasting is intentionally setting aside food (or another regular part of daily life) for a season, in order to give focused attention to prayer and to God. It's not a diet or a discipline of willpower — it's a spiritual tool that quiets distraction and sharpens our hunger for God above our physical appetites.
Why Fast As a Church?
Throughout Scripture, God's people fasted together in seasons of decision, need, and breakthrough. When we fast as a church family, we align our prayers, multiply our faith, and posture our whole community to hear from God before we step into a new season.
Choosing Your Fast
There's no single "right way" to fast. Choose an approach that stretches your dependence on God without compromising your health or responsibilities. When in doubt, start small and consult your doctor if you have any medical concerns.
Full Fast
Abstaining from all food, consuming only water and/or clear liquids for a set period.
Daniel Fast
A plant-based fast of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains — no meat, dairy, or processed foods.
Partial Fast
Skipping specific meals (e.g., breakfast and lunch) or fasting from sunup to sundown.
Media Fast
Stepping away from social media, TV, or entertainment to create space for prayer.
Specific Item
Giving up one thing — sugar, coffee, fast food — as a daily reminder to pray.
Family-Friendly
Kids and families can fast a favorite snack, screen time, or a meal together as a household.

That's completely okay! Fast something else — social media, TV, sugar, or a specific meal. What matters most is the posture of your heart, not the type of fast.
