What does the Bible teach on fasting?

The purpose of biblical fasting is for us to draw near to God. In James 4:8 the bible tells us, “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you”. Through fasting you are creating space to hear God more clearly, strengthening your faith and trust in him. Fasting is designed to intensify our dependence on God by weakening our dependence on food and other things that might be a distraction from God. It allows us to prepare our hearts to receive everything that God desires to bring about in our lives because of his goodness. In fact, scripture teaches that some things will only change through prayer and fasting (Mark 9:29 KJV).

Types of fast

  • Selective Fast:

Removing certain elements from your diet. One example of a selective fast is the Daniel Fast, during which you remove meat, sweets, and bread from your diet and consume water and juice for fluids and fruits and vegetables for food.

  • Partial Fast:

Abstaining from eating any type of food in the morning or afternoon or choosing to fast one specific meal per day.

  • Soul Fast:

You might choose to stop using social media or watching television for the duration of the fast and then carefully bring that element back into your life in healthy doses at the conclusion of the fast. This may be good if you have specific health needs or when restricting food would be harmful to you.

  • Complete Fast:

In this type of fast, you drink only liquids, typically water with light juices as an option.
